Revamping the Sloppy Joe Burger Game:

Here's the skinny on this mouthwatering treat. Although its original source is a bit blurry, the sloppy Joe - a bursting-with-flavor dish - has been around for quite some time. Some claim it hails from a tavern in Sioux City, Iowa, during the swinging '30s. But who knows for sure? What we do know is that sloppy Joe goodness ain't limited to buns; it's killer with pasta, potatoes, or rice!

Let's tuck in. Spoon a heapin' half-cup of sloppy Joe heaven over a toasted bun's half, then top it off with the other bun half.

  • Serves up 8 hearty portions

Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons of olive oil
  • 1 large onion finely chopped
  • 1 large carrot minced
  • 1 celery stalk minced
  • 6 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1/2 cup of tomato paste
  • 2 1/2 cups of tomato puree
  • 3 tablespoons of cider vinegar
  • 1/4 cup of molasses
  • 3 tablespoons of Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 pounds of ground beef round

Instructions:

  1. Heat a large skillet to a medium heat. Pour in the olive oil, then add the onion, carrot, celery, and garlic, stirring until they're softened (takes approx 5-7 minutes). Toss in the tomato paste, puree, vinegar, molasses, and Worcestershire. Crank it up to a simmer, then reduce the heat, and allow the mixture to gently simmer until thickened and the flavors have come together (about 45-60 minutes). If the sauce thickens excessively, add a smidgen of water.
  2. Cook off the ground beef in another large skillet on medium-high heat until it's no longer bewitched, then drain the extra grease. Throw the sauce into the skillet and let it simmer with the beef on medium-low heat, allowing the flavors to roam together for at least 10 minutes.
