Man with Firearms Holes Up in Ibiza House, Eventually Yielding
In the peaceful residential area of Siesta, Santa Eulària, Ibiza, a tense standoff unfolded last week. The incident began after a social worker visited the apartment of a Portuguese man on Calle ses Violetes.
The man, who has a history of post-traumatic stress disorder due to war, forced the social worker out of his home and threatened to take his own life. He barricaded himself inside, refusing to communicate.
The local police and the Special Reserve and Security Group (GRS) of the Civil Guard were swiftly called to the scene. The operation, which also involved a negotiator from Mallorca, escalated as the man threatened to harm anyone who tried to intervene.
Despite the tense situation, the man was eventually detained without the use of force. Upon the arrival of the police, he had pointed a revolver, which was later found to be fake.
During the standoff, the man initially ignored the negotiator and did not answer the phone. However, after some time, he agreed to speak to the negotiator through the door. The negotiator, named José Luis, managed to establish a dialogue with the man, eventually leading to his peaceful surrender.
The man was examined by paramedics and was later transferred to the Hospital Can Misses for further medical attention and psychiatric evaluation. The police also managed to contact the man's granddaughter in Portugal, who was informed about the incident.
Social services have requested the man's admission to a residential unit for further care and treatment. This incident serves as a reminder of the delicate nature of such situations and the crucial role of the civil authorities in handling them.
