Managing Arthritis: A Guide

In a bid to help those suffering from joint issues, the Endoprosthesis Center Solingen is hosting an informative afternoon at the Städtisches Klinikum Solingen on Friday, July 25, 2025, from 3:00 PM to 4:30 PM. This event offers an opportunity for individuals to learn about the latest advancements in hip and knee joint replacement surgery.

Joint issues, such as arthritis, can lead to swelling, pain, and decreased mobility, significantly affecting quality of life. Symptoms like pain worsened by activity and relieved by rest, swelling and tenderness around the joints, a grating or cracking sound when moving the affected joint, and limited mobility are common indicators of joint problems[1][3][4][5].

During the event, two distinguished specialists will share their expertise: Dr. med. Oliver Voß, Director of the Endoprosthesis Center, will lecture on knee joint replacement, while Dr. Henning Quitmann, a leading physician for minimally invasive endoprosthetics, will discuss hip joint replacement and minimally invasive procedures.

When considering surgery for an artificial joint, thorough medical consultation is crucial. Factors such as age, general health condition, and personal living situation play a role in the selection of the suitable prosthesis model and surgical method[6]. The technique used to implant the prosthesis is also a factor in the selection process.

For hip replacements, common models include moorland hip replacement, total hip replacement (THR), and resurfacing hip replacement. Materials used for endoprostheses vary, including metal-on-metal, metal-on-polyethylene, and ceramic-on-ceramic[7]. Surgical techniques can be minimally invasive or traditional open surgery, with the former aiming to reduce recovery time and minimize tissue damage.

For knee replacements, options include total knee arthroplasty (TKA) and partial knee arthroplasty (PKA). Materials similar to those used in hip replacements are also used for knee prosthetics[7]. Advanced methods like computer-assisted surgery and robotic-assisted surgery can enhance precision and reduce recovery time.

Younger and more active individuals may benefit from more durable materials and less invasive procedures, while the extent of bone loss or joint damage can influence the choice of implant and surgical technique. Conditions like diabetes or obesity might affect healing and recovery, influencing surgical decisions.

Registration for the event can be done by email at [email protected] or by phone at 0212 - 547-0. Attendees will have the chance to learn more about the latest advancements in artificial joint replacement and gain insights into the selection process for the most appropriate endoprosthesis and surgical method based on individual needs and circumstances.
