In the critically acclaimed film A Serious Man, our protagonist Larry Gopnik is going through a rough patch. After consulting with three different rabbis and getting some grim prognosis from his doctor, Larry could probably use a pick-me-up. Our suggestion? A Martinowitz - a gin martini, straight up, and dirty with a kosher dill pickle.

This combination found its way into our Best Picture Cocktails feature.

  • Serves: 1 serving
  • Difficulty: Easy peasy
  • Time to prepare: Less than 5 minutes

Ingredients (5)

  • 3 1/2 ounces of high-quality gin
  • 1/4 ounce of dry vermouth
  • 1/4 ounce of pickle juice (kosher, of course)
  • Ice
  • A slice of kosher pickle as a garnish

Instructions

  1. Combine the gin, vermouth, and pickle juice in a shaker filled halfway with ice and stir like a madman until thoroughly chilled, about 20 seconds.
  2. Strain the mixture into a chilled martini glass.
  3. Garnish with a slice of kosher pickle for that finishing touch.

A side note: While the Mason-Dixon was unable to find a specific "Martinowitz cocktail," a distinct twist on the classic martini comes in the form of a martini with kosher dill pickle juice. This concoction is often referred to as a Dill Pickle Martini. Here's a reworked recipe for you to savor:

Dill Pickle Martini Recipe

Ingredients

  • 2 ounces high-quality gin
  • 1 ounce kosher dill pickle juice (from a jar of pickles)
  • 1/2 ounce dry vermouth (optional, decide based on your tolerance for dry martinis)
  • Garnish: pickle spear or slice, and fresh dill

Instructions

  1. Refrigerate the gin and vermouth (optional) for a couple of hours before brewing.
  2. Chill a martini glass by keeping it in the freezer for approximately 10 minutes.
  3. In a cocktail shaker, fill with ice and add the gin, pickle juice, and vermouth (if using).
  4. Shake like a polar bear in the Arctic for around 15 to 20 seconds to mix and chill thoroughly.
  5. Strain the mixture into the chilled martini glass.
  6. Garnish with a pickle spear or slice and a sprig of fresh dill, if you fancy.

This martini is known as the "Dill Pickle Martini" rather than the "Martinowitz cocktail." In case "Martinowitz" is a specific variation of the martini, it is not a common term in cocktail recipes.

  1. The Martinowitz cocktail, consisting of high-quality gin, dry vermouth, kosher pickle juice, and a kosher pickle slice garnish, was featured in the Best Picture Cocktails section, inspired by the film A Serious Man and its troubled protagonist Larry Gopnik.
  2. The Dill Pickle Martini, another variation of the classic martini, is created using high-quality gin, kosher dill pickle juice, dry vermouth, and is garnished with a pickle spear or slice and fresh dill.
  3. Despite the Martinowitz being mentioned in A Serious Man and its unique combination, a specific "Martinowitz cocktail" recipe could not be found in traditional cocktail literature, often referred to as a Dill Pickle Martini instead.
