Measles Case Identified in Denton County, List of Potential Exposure Sites Provided
Heads Up! Measles Strikes Denton County - Here's What You Need to Know
Catch this - Denton County Public Health (DCPH) reported the region's first measles case today. An unlucky adult with an unknown vaccination status is the unfortunate victim, according to DCPH's report. They won't dish out any personal deets, though.
Measles is a sneaky, airborne son of a gun that spreads like wildfire when an infected squidge coughs or sneezes. You could pick it up simply by hanging out in a room where one of these jokers has been - even up to two hours after they've bailed!
Check out the spots DCPH said the infected person hit up recently:
- Pretty Burrito, 500 Flower Mound Road, Flower Mound, April 19, 10 a.m.-noon
- Donut Plaza, 1900 S. Garden Ridge Blvd., Flower Mound, April 19, 10 a.m.-noon
- Rangers Republic at Texas Live!, 1605 E. Randol Mill Road, Arlington, April 19, 2-5 p.m.
- Globe Life Field, 734 Stadium Drive, Arlington, April 19, 3-8 p.m.
- Guitars and Growlers, 400 Flower Mound Road, Flower Mound, April 19, 6 p.m.-midnight
- Walmart, 801 W. Main St., Lewisville, 10 p.m. April 19 to 1 a.m. April 20
- Flower Mound United Methodist Church, 3950 Bruton Orand Blvd., Flower Mound, April 20, 11 a.m.-2 p.m.
- WinCo Foods, 1288 W. Main St., Lewisville, April 21, 8-11:30 p.m.
- Pho Tay Do, 1400 E. Campbell Road, Suite 104, Richardson, April 22, 3-6:30 p.m.
DCPH might add more locations to the list once they've done some more digging.
Whoa, now - if you hit up these spots on the times mentioned and you're unprotected (unvaccinated, pregnant, or immunocompromised), skedaddle to your health care rigger and let 'em know. DCPH advises immediate consultation if you fall in that category.
If you're good to go, just watch for these measly symptoms for the next 21 days:
- Raging fever
- A hacking cough
- An attack of the sniffles
- Squinted, red peepers
- Fuzzy, white spots in the kisser (two to three days in)
- A red rash all over the place, starting on the face and traveling southward (three to five days after the spots in the mouth appear)
Should the symptoms rear their ugly heads, buddy, don't be a hero. Duck away at home, give your doc a yell, and call before paying a visit to avoid infecting others.
DCPH recommends double-checking your vaccination records with your physician. Those born before 1957 don't need to worry, as they're already immune to measles. The rest of the adults should get at least one dose of the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine. If you're at risk (college students, jetsetters, medical folk, etc.), two doses are recommended.
No harm in grabbing another MMR shot if you're uncertain of your vaccination status.
DCPH suggests kids receive their first MMR dose between 12 to 15 months and a second dose before school.
