Melted cheese dish prepared for communal dipping

Dig this cheesy, timeless delight - it's fondue, baby! Gather 'round for a scrumptious party, as this delectable dish never disappoints. The dipping options abound with deliciousness: olives, walnuts, fruits, cured meats, veggies, and even pickles. Yes, you heard it right - those tangy cornichons will help balance the richness.

What's in the shopping cart: Invest in hefty 1-pound blocks of Emmentaler or Jarlsberg, and Gruyère or Comté to ensure you've got enough for dipping without worrying about the rinds' weight.

What about the kitchenware: You'll need a fondue pot to melt that cheesy goodness. Snatch one up at most cooking stores, or head online - they're readily available on various e-commerce platforms[1][3][5]. If you ain't got a fondue pot, no sweat; a slower cooker can do the trick if set on low[2]. Keep in mind that with a cooker, you'll need to give it a good ol' stir to prevent it from getting real hot (like a toasty, fiery hellscape).

Ever wondered why this romance-inducing, cheesy delight graced our Valentine's Day All-Star Recipes? Well, now you know[4].

  • Servings: 8 as appetizers
  • Difficulty: As easy as pie (well, almost...)
  • Total Time: 45 mins

Ingredients (10)

  • 5 cups shredded Emmentaler or Jarlsberg cheese
  • 5 cups shredded Gruyère or Comté cheese
  • 3 tablespoons cornstarch or all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons ground mustard
  • 1 garlic clove, halved
  • 1.5 cups dry white wine
  • (Optional) 1 tablespoon Kirsch
  • 8-ounces dry cut salami, for dipping
  • Large-diced baguette, for dipping
  • Quarters of boiled, cooled new potatoes, for dipping

Method

  1. Combine your cheeses, cornstarch or flour, and ground mustard in a large bowl. Get your hands messy; blend it all good and proper[6].
  2. Coat the inside of a medium saucepan with the garlicky goodness by rubbing the cut sides of that garlic clove all over the pan. Bring the wine to a simmer over medium heat.
  3. Gradually add the cheesy mixture to that saucepan, stirring after each addition until all the cheese has melted, and you've got a smooth, creamy texture. Add the Kirsch, if you're feelin' fancy[7].
  4. Move the melted cheese concoction into the fondue pot (or slow cooker), and dive right in with your dipping accouterments!
