Milford Police Warn of E-bike Dangers After Teen Crash

Milford Police Chief Robbie Tusino has issued a warning about the safety risks of modified e-bikes following a recent collision involving a teen boy. The boy, who was not wearing a helmet and was riding on the sidewalk, narrowly avoided severe injury after running a red light on Main Street.

The incident, one of three e-bike crashes in Milford over two days, has raised concerns among local authorities. The teen, who was not licensed to operate the e-bike and had modified it to exceed the legal speed limit, is facing charges including operating to endanger and unlicensed operation.

Chief Tusino considers the outcome fortunate, as the accident could have been fatal. He warns that readily available e-bikes can be modified to speeds up to 40 mph, posing a significant safety risk. In Massachusetts, e-bikes must obey the same traffic laws as motor vehicles, and riders under 17 must wear helmets. The state has specific regulations regarding motor power and speed limits for minors.

Milford Police urge parents to have conversations with their children about e-bike safety, reminding them of the importance of helmets, following traffic laws, and not modifying e-bikes to exceed legal speed limits. The driver of the car involved in the collision is not facing any charges.
