Over a Million Germans Braved the Cold Last Winter to Slash Heating Bills

Millions scrimp on heating during winter to minimize expenses

In a moved that's become a chilling reality for over 1.8 million people, three percent of the population in Germany have been toughing out the winter cold to save a few bucks on their heating bills. According to a survey by Verivox, these folks have been living in the deep freeze, with gas heaters being the major culprit.

A staggering 19 percent, or 13 million adults, have also been making significant sacrifices to their comfort, cranking down their thermostats to save a penny or two. Last winter was significantly colder than the one before, and the increase in gas prices due to the return of the full VAT rate on natural gas in April 2024 didn't help matters. Add to that the relentless climb in CO2 prices at the beginning of the year, and you've got a frigid recipe for energy savings.

Verivox energy expert Thorsten Storck explains, "Many people, forced by rising costs, found their homes too cold as they turned down their heaters." The survey, conducted among 1,007 individuals aged 18 to 79, is said to be an accurate representation of the population in terms of age, gender, and federal state.

Now, don't get me wrong—I ain't condoning this icy lifestyle. But it's a grim testament to the economic times we live in when folks are forced to choose between warmth and wallets. If you're one of those looking to beat the chill on a budget, consider investing in insulation, warmer clothing, or energy-efficient heating systems. After all, being cozy doesn't have to cost an arm and a leg.

Worth Noting: While the exact figure of 1.8 million people braving the cold hasn't been independently verified, it's not uncommon for people worldwide, especially in Europe, to cut back on heating during harsh winters due to financial constraints or a desire to save energy.

  1. The community in Germany, inspired by a financial crunch, has increasingly been advocating for a policy focused on energy efficiency and cost-saving measures, such as insulation and energy-efficient heating systems, to combat the cold winter months.
  2. In light of the health-and-wellness concerns associated with prolonged exposure to cold temperatures, it's crucial for employment policy to account for the comfort and well-being of workers, especially during the winter months, to ensure productivity and job satisfaction.
  3. As the science behind climate change becomes more evident, personal-finance measures like energy savings have gained importance in the science and health-and-wellness discourse, with fitness-and-exercise enthusiasts encouraging alternative means of heat generation, like regular exercise to maintain body heat, as part of a holistic approach to health and cost savings.
