The documentary film "The Chocolate War," directed by Miki Mistrati, offers a compelling look into the fight against structural exploitation in the chocolate industry. Scheduled to take place on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, at 6 pm, this event promises to shed light on a pressing global issue.

The event will take place at the Volkshochschule Grafschaft Bentheim, located at Bernhard-Niehues-Straße 49 in Nordhorn. The screening will be followed by an insightful discussion, where Stella Diettrich from the INKOTA network e.V. will address topics such as corporate responsibility, voluntary sustainability initiatives, legal regulations like the German Supply Chain Act, and consumer options to prevent dangerous child labor.

At the heart of the documentary is American human rights lawyer Terry Collingsworth, who is seen fighting against the structural exploitation of child workers and slaves on cocoa plantations in Côte d'Ivoire. Collingsworth regularly travels to Côte d'Ivoire to collect evidence for a lawsuit against international chocolate manufacturers and cocoa processors such as Hershey, Nestlé, and Cargill.

This legal battle is a significant step in the fight against such exploitation. The lawsuit, though challenging due to the food giants' resources and legal teams, is a testament to Collingsworth's determination and commitment to justice.

"The Chocolate War" is not Mistrati's first film to tackle the dark side of the chocolate industry. His previous work, "Dirty Hands," caused a stir in 2010 by documenting the systematic exploitation of children on West African cocoa plantations, despite promises from the chocolate industry to the contrary.

As consumers, we have the power to make a difference. By choosing products from fair trade or those certified with credible social labels, supporting and donating to organizations fighting child exploitation, participating in awareness campaigns and online discussions like after watching "The Chocolate War," advocating for binding corporate responsibility laws with transparent supply chains, and demanding free, quality education for children, we can help reduce the risk of child labor.

The event, organised by the Steering Group Fair Trade City Nordhorn, the Working Group One World / World Shop, and the Volkshochschule Grafschaft Bentheim, is free of charge but requires prior registration via the VHS website. The event details, including registration, can be found at https://courses.vhs-website.

Join us on October 7 to learn more about this important issue and take a step towards making a difference. The documentary "The Chocolate War" may encourage viewers to take action against exploitation in the chocolate industry, bringing attention to this pressing issue and inspiring change.
