"My past has instilled a sense of accountability within me, a duty that continues unfalteringly"

In a heartfelt ceremony on August 28, 2025, the city of Gütersloh inaugurated the Women's Place NRW, a monument dedicated to the lives and achievements of historically significant women. The occasion was a poignant tribute to Sabine Gramlich, a local resident and a beacon of peace, justice, and women's empowerment who passed away in 2024.

Sabine Gramlich, who had lived in Gütersloh since 1955, was a teacher by profession but her impact extended far beyond the classroom. She was a tireless advocate for women's rights, organising rallies, vigils, and demonstrations to make her voice heard and to encourage women and girls to forge their own paths.

Her commitment to peace, justice, and ensuring women have a strong voice in societal debates was seen as a challenge and inspiration by many. This was evident in her involvement with various organisations such as the refugee council, church women's groups, the psychiatry department of the LWL clinic, Amnesty International, and the peace movement.

One of her most notable initiatives was the 'Political Night Prayer', a peaceful protest that she organised even in her late seventies. Her actions, driven by a deep sense of responsibility towards history, were summed up by her own words: "History challenged me to take responsibility, and this is never-ending."

The Women's Place NRW project was initiated by the Women's Council NRW and funded by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The project, which includes a memorial plaque for Sabine Gramlich, was spearheaded by Inge Trame, Julia Kuklik, and Eckhard Müller.

During the inauguration, city archivist Julia Kuklik recounted milestones in Sabine Gramlich's life, while Dagmar C. Weinert provided musical moments, including interpretations of peace-themed songs like "Boundaries" by Dota Kehr. The event also included personal memories shared by Sabine Gramlich's sons, Peter and Rainer, who remembered their mother with love and admiration.

Inge Trame, who spearheaded the application for the Women's Place NRW in Gütersloh, stated that the memorial plaque for Sabine Gramlich keeps her in the cityscape and living memory. This is a fitting tribute to a woman who dedicated her life to making a difference and inspiring others.

The Sabine Gramlich Award for the construction of Frauenplatz NRW in Gütersloh, organised by the city, serves as another testament to the enduring impact of Sabine Gramlich's life and work. Her legacy continues to inspire and challenge, encouraging future generations to take responsibility and forge their own paths towards a more just and equitable society.
