The NHS National Rehabilitation Centre (NRC) is set to implement a new innovation in patient care with the introduction of intelligent bedside terminals. These advanced iPads, provided by Airwave Healthcare, are set to enhance patient independence during rehabilitation.

Key features of these intelligent bedside terminals include:

  • Control of patient environment: Patients can adjust room blinds, lighting, and heating, promoting autonomy and independence in their recovery.
  • Educational content: Access to rehabilitation-specific educational materials personalized to each patient’s journey.
  • Personalized diaries: Patients receive updates on their daily activity schedules to stay informed and engaged.
  • Integration with electronic patient records: Patients can view real-time data such as estimated discharge dates, medications, diet plans, and care team information, fostering active participation in their care.
  • Communication tools: Video calling capabilities enable patients to connect easily with friends and family from accessible devices.
  • Meal ordering: Patients can order meals directly via the same device, enhancing convenience and comfort during their stay.

The platforms use an enhanced version of MyCareTV service, tailored for treatment support.

The impact on patient independence is significant. These terminals empower patients to manage their environment and access relevant information and communication tools, supporting 24-hour engagement in their rehabilitation and facilitating a more active role in their recovery.

The technology is part of a broader digital strategy at the NRC to digitize and personalize rehabilitation care, emphasizing patient autonomy and integration with care systems.

Airwave Healthcare was chosen to provide the intelligent bedside terminals at the NHS National Rehabilitation Centre after a rigorous procurement process. Dean Moody, healthcare services director at Airwave Healthcare, stated that investment in technology to stimulate and engage patients in their care is crucial for enhancing recovery.

Moody expressed that it is a privilege to support the NRC, which serves as a strong example of rehabilitation transformation, and Airwave Healthcare is committed to assisting staff in delivering the best for patients. Moody also mentioned that the needs of patients at the National Rehabilitation Centre highlight this importance even more.

Airwave Healthcare will continue to collaborate with healthcare professionals to understand evolving needs and innovate accordingly during this agreement. The new intelligent bedside terminals at the NRC represent a pioneering step in patient-centred rehabilitation technology in the NHS.
