Wuppertal Unveils New Public Drinking Water Fountain at Schusterplatz

Wuppertal, a city known for its cultural and natural attractions, has added a new public drinking water fountain to its list of amenities. Located at Schusterplatz, this fountain is accessible to all, including wheelchair users, and forms part of the city's commitment to sustainability and public health.

The park where the fountain is situated, Bayer Park in Heckinghausen, has undergone a transformation as part of the "Social City Heckinghausen" program. Funded by the European Fund for Regional Development (EFRE NRW 2014-2020) and "Investments in Growth and Employment", the park has been expanded and redesigned, turning it into a small green oasis with seating, play, and urban gardening areas.

The new drinking water fountain at Schusterplatz is one of six freely accessible fountains in Wuppertal. The others are located at Der Grüne Zoo, Gutenbergplatz, Bandwirker Platz, Wichlinghauser market, Nordbahntrasse at Breslauer Straße, and Unterer Dorrenberg.

The patrons of the Schusterplatz fountain are Christiane Sippel and Guido Mengelberg. The fountains are installed by the WSW, maintained by the WAW, and operated by the public. The condition of the fountains is regularly checked on site, with any issues reported to the WAW.

Water samples from the fountains are analyzed monthly by the Bergisches Water and Environmental Laboratory to ensure the quality of the tap water, which in Germany has food quality and is regularly controlled. Tap water is a sustainable and cost-effective alternative to bottled drinking or mineral water.

For those seeking more detailed information about the exact locations, maintenance schedules, and policies for public drinking water fountains in Wuppertal, it is recommended to consult the official Wuppertal city website or contact the city’s public utilities department directly.

The Bayer Park in Heckinghausen, where the Schusterplatz fountain is situated, is located near the Visiodrom, the Heckinghauser district center, and an DIY store on Widukindstraße. The park is bounded by parking spaces on one side and lies like an island between Waldeckstraße, Widukindstraße, and Werléstraße. Despite not being one of the six initially mentioned drinking water fountain locations, the Schusterplatz fountain is a welcome addition to Wuppertal's public spaces, promoting hydration, reducing plastic waste, and encouraging outdoor activities.

The new Schusterplatz fountain in Wuppertal, part of the city's commitment to sustainability and public health, lies within the transformed Bayer Park, which is now a green oasis for recreation. Moreover, this fountain, installed as a part of the "Environmental-science" initiative, offers a sustainable and cost-effective alternative to bottled water, supporting health-and-wellness and reducing plastic waste.
