Nosebleeds: When to Seek ENT Specialist Help

Nosebleeds, a common occurrence, can be managed with simple home remedies. However, persistent or unusual nosebleeds may require medical attention, particularly from an ear, nose, and throat specialist (ENT). To stop a nosebleed, avoid picking or forcefully sneezing. Instead, use a cold pack on the neck or pinch the nostrils. Contrary to popular belief, tilting the head back can cause blood to enter the stomach, potentially leading to vomiting. Most nosebleeds originate in the front of the nose and are harmless. They usually stop within a few minutes. However, if a nosebleed lasts longer than 20 minutes, occurs regularly, or mainly occurs in the back part of the nose, seek medical attention. In Germany, an otolaryngologist, or ENT doctor, is trained to diagnose and treat disorders of the nose and surrounding structures. While nosebleeds are common, it's important to know when to seek medical help. Most can be managed at home, but persistent or unusual nosebleeds may require the expertise of an ENT specialist.
