Preparing for the Pendant: Dresden's Semperoper Hones Flood-response Skills

Practicing Flood Defense at Semperoper - Opera Semper with Flood Defense Drill

Ready for the worst-turned-real: This coming Saturday, the Semperoper in Dresden puts its flood protection plan to the test, honing responses to potential flood disasters during an exercise. "This exercise is a crucial component of a comprehensive safety strategy inspired by the lessons learned from the millennium flood in 2002," announced the German Red Cross (DRK).

Remembering the century's wrath: Following the devastating flood, the Semperoper itself was submerged, rendering it unfit to stage performances for extended periods. The deluge cost around €27 million in damages, halting the season's commencement for three months. The opera house resumed normal operation in March 2003.

A fortified bastion: Now, Dresden's State Opera stands more prepared than ever, thanks to structural improvements and the acquisition of mobile flood protection. Its array of state-of-the-art equipment includes robust pumps, strategically positioned at the DRK Logistik HUB. The German Red Cross will promptly transport these tools to the opera grounds in the event of a flood warning.

The Big Day: Saturday's training session will see the Technical Relief Agency deploy protective barriers on Theaterplatz, with support from the Saxon Reserve Association and the State Opera employees. Their primary objective is to smooth cooperation between all parties, tested during the alarm, material transportation, and setup of protective systems.

Flood protection in Dresden typically incorporates the installation of flood gates, levees, and mobile flood systems to shield key areas, including a city's cultural treasures like the Semperoper. During emergencies, the German Red Cross facilitates evacuations, medical care, and temporary lodging for affected residents. Dresden has also shown interest in implementing innovative urban planning concepts, such as sponge city designs, to bolster its flood defenses. [1][2]
