Police officer administers Narcan to revive police chief after fentanyl overdose during apprehension encounter
In a shocking turn of events, Wiscasset Police Chief Larry Hesseltine found himself in a critical situation during an arrest. The incident, which was caught on camera, unfolded as Officer Jonathan Barnes noticed Chief Hesseltine was not responsive. Chief Hesseltine appeared to be overdosing, with signs such as staring at the ground, not breathing, and making gurgling sounds. In response, Officer Barnes called for a second ambulance to ensure immediate medical assistance. During the incident, Officer Barnes also bandaged Chief Hesseltine's arm, which he had cut during the arrest while coming into contact with a guardrail. The suspected fentanyl likely got into Chief Hesseltine's bloodstream due to the cut. After being administered Narcan by Officer Barnes, Chief Hesseltine regained consciousness a minute later. However, he did not remember the Narcan administration. Upon regaining consciousness, he found himself on the ground with his uniform cut off and probes attached to his body. Chief Hesseltine remembers leaning up against the police cruiser before losing consciousness. He also believes he may have come into contact with white powder during the search of the suspect's vehicle. The EMTs worked on Chief Hesseltine when the second ambulance arrived. After the incident, he felt light-headed. Joshua Watters and George Bronn, who were arrested during the same incident, are currently in jail on charges of unlawful drug possession, carrying a concealed weapon, violating a condition of release, and possession of drug paraphernalia. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers that law enforcement officers face every day. Officer Barnes' quick thinking and swift action undoubtedly played a crucial role in saving Chief Hesseltine's life. Our thoughts are with Chief Hesseltine and his family during this difficult time.
