Pregnancy at 10 weeks: Signs, genetic exams, and fetal growth details
**Fetal Development: A Journey Through the Second Trimester**
As the first trimester comes to a close, the second trimester ushers in a period of rapid growth and development for the baby. This stage, spanning from week 13 to week 26, is marked by the maturation of critical organ systems, the emergence of sensory abilities, and the development of motor skills.
**Early Second Trimester (Weeks 13–14)**
By week 13, the fetus is around 7–8 cm (crown to rump) and weighs approximately 23 grams—about the size of a peach or lemon. All major organs are formed and continue to mature. Bone structure develops, joints mature, toes separate, and muscle and brain control improve. The baby is very active, floating and moving freely in the amniotic fluid.
**Mid-Second Trimester (Weeks 15–17)**
Taste buds and olfactory receptors begin to develop around week 14–15, while eyes start forming, and the retina begins developing. The fetus can detect tactile stimuli as the skin develops. Swallowing and sucking reflexes develop, and a fat layer formation begins, with the skin, while still thin, starting to thicken.
**Late Second Trimester (Weeks 18–21)**
By week 18–19, significant weight gain begins, and the fetus is about the size of a bell pepper or sweet potato. Kicking and limb movements become more coordinated. Grasping and other reflexes develop. The ears are more developed, and the fetus can detect external sounds around week 20–21. Skin thickens further, and vernix caseosa (a protective coating) and fat layers begin to form around week 20–21.
**Preparation for Third Trimester (Weeks 22–26)**
The digestive system begins to practice contractions, the pancreas produces digestive enzymes, and the kidneys produce urine. Sensitivity to touch and pain increases, and the senses of hearing and vision become more refined. The baby continues to grow rapidly in size and weight, with the lungs developing but not yet mature. The fetus is active and responds to external stimuli.
This detailed timeline provides a clear view of the developmental progression during the second trimester, focusing on size, organ maturation, sensory, and motor milestones. Pregnancy symptoms such as fatigue, nausea, cravings, heartburn, bloating, gas, constipation, headaches, increased vaginal discharge, dizziness, faintness, round ligament pain, visible veins, and moodiness may continue.
Sequential integrated screen, serum integrated screen, quad marker screen, and chorionic villus sampling (CVS) are some tests offered during pregnancy to screen for genetic abnormalities. It is safe to eat fish during pregnancy, but it is recommended to limit intake to between 2 to 3 servings of fish a week, chosen from a list of safe options.
Genetic testing and prenatal screening can begin around 10 weeks into gestation, and some tests can evaluate for Down syndrome and other inherited disorders. During week 10, the vocal cords of the fetus are formed, and if it were not underwater, they would be able to make sounds soon.
