In the heart of Rhein-Kreis Neuss, mayors from Dormagen, Grevenbroich, and Rommerskirchen express grave concerns over the deterioration of healthcare services in their districts, specifically the reform of the Rheinland Klinikum. This reform, initially presented as harmonious, has induced distress within the affected communities, as decisions have since materialized without consultation.

The crux of the issue involves the closure of the maternity ward in Dormagen, effective April 1st, and the discontinuation of the emergency ambulance service in Grevenbroich from July 1st of this year. Residents fear the potential consequences should emergency cases from the Grevenbroich outskirts require transportation to Neuss, as response times could be significantly extended.

On January 20th, a coalition of politicians, private individuals, and concerned citizens gathered on the third floor of the new town hall in Dormagen to address these concerns. Led by Mayor Erik Lierenfeld, they called for preservation of existing healthcare services and questioned the transparency of Rheinland Klinikum's management. While representatives from Neuss were absent from the press conference, Lierenfeld reported ongoing communication efforts with the hospital's leadership and local decision-makers, which have been met with limited success and a pattern of gradual implementation.

A grassroots citizens' initiative has been launched in response, led by Lierenfeld, Heinz Hilgers, and Bernd Gellrich. Their goal is to collect 20,000 signatures to potentially trigger a citizens' decision, compelling the district council to address their concerns. However, even if successful, the council would not be legally bound by their decision.

In a broader context, hospitals across German regions, including rural and district areas, face criticisms and protests related to hospital plans, closures, and management reforms. Although specific data on Rhein-Kreis Neuss is lacking, if protests are occurring there, they would likely mirror similar concerns: hospital restructuring plans, funding decisions, or changes in management affecting local healthcare services.

The concerns voiced by the mayors of Dormagen, Grevenbroich, and Rommerskirchen revolve around the impacts of the Rheinland Klinikum's healthcare service reform on their districts, particularly medical-conditions such as maternity care and emergency services. In response, a health-and-wellness focused grassroots initiative aims to collect signatures and addresses these issues via a potential citizens' decision, despite the lack of binding power over the district council.
