Sexual predator, infected with HIV, uses Grindr for dating, potentially infecting 320 others, as police call on potential victims to step forward
In a chilling case that has shaken the community, a man named Jonathan Carl has been convicted of rape and grievous bodily harm of reckless transmission of HIV. The investigation, which began in 2020, has uncovered a troubling history of digital contacts and encounters.
Carl, described as prolific and only interested in his own sexual desires, made around 400 digital contacts through the dating apps Grindr and Scruff between 2019 and 2023. He mainly met people at his home address above a chip shop in London, and on some occasions, he would meet "three or four people a day".
The investigation was initiated after a man reported waking up to being raped after meeting Carl. Since then, the police have identified 82 of the 400 men Carl contacted, and some have tested positive for HIV. However, there are still 318 men that need to be identified and tested for HIV.
Detective Superintendent Lewis Basford stated that there are "significant number of very vulnerable individuals who could be victim-survivors of rape". He also mentioned that there are messages and content indicating the existence of victims of rape who have not come forward to the police.
One of the victims, who came forward, stated that he felt powerless, less than human, and wanted to prevent others from experiencing the same. Another victim shared that the incident has damaged his ability to have romantic relationships and causes him to overthink and feel guilty.
The home address of Jonathan Carl, where many of his encounters took place, is distinctively located above a fish and chip shop in Hornchurch. Carl was sentenced to 17 years in jail for rape and grievous bodily harm of reckless transmission of HIV.
The police have appealed for potential victims of Carl to come forward. Anyone who may have had contact with Carl is urged to contact detectives directly or email [email protected]. It is crucial for these individuals to seek testing and support, as well as to help bring justice to those affected by Carl's actions.
Footage of Carl being arrested hears him saying "rape? I can't believe it" when he was informed of the allegations. Despite his denial, the evidence against him was overwhelming, leading to his conviction.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of consent, safety, and accountability in our digital age. It is essential that we continue to support victims and hold offenders accountable for their actions. If you or someone you know has had contact with Jonathan Carl, please consider coming forward to help bring closure to this harrowing case.
