Spain removes 44 children and their families from Gaza's dangerous environment
In a bid to provide urgent medical treatment and alleviate the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip, the Spanish government has completed four additional evacuation missions over the past few months. These missions have seen the rescue of 44 children suffering from serious conditions such as heart diseases, war trauma, and pediatric oncology, along with their families.
The evacuated individuals hail from the Palestinian territory, which has been grappling with a dire humanitarian situation. The health system in Gaza is overwhelmed, hospitals have been severely affected by bombings, and supplies and aid deliveries are restricted. This has led to a worsening famine and mass starvation risk, with over 19,000 children in Gaza having lost one or both parents since the conflict escalated.
The Spanish government, one of the sharpest critics of Israel's actions in the Gaza Strip within the European Union, has organised these evacuations in collaboration with international organisations and allied countries. The handover of the evacuated individuals took place at safe locations outside the conflict zone. Alongside the children, around a hundred close family members were also evacuated to Spain.
These evacuated children and their relatives can now apply for asylum in Spain. Upon arrival, they were admitted to hospitals across several Spanish regions, where they are currently undergoing treatment. For instance, on August 1, 2025, Spain evacuated 13 children with heart conditions and their families from Gaza via Jordan, coordinated by the World Health Organization and cared for by Médecins Sans Frontières during transit.
As the situation in Gaza remains critical and unstable, with ongoing conflict and severe civilian suffering, calls to rescue injured and sick children from the Palestinian territory are growing louder in other countries, such as Germany. Spain positions its evacuation efforts as part of its solidarity and critical stance on the ongoing conflict, emphasizing calls for ceasefire and unrestricted humanitarian access.
While these evacuations have provided a glimmer of hope for some, the overall humanitarian situation in Gaza remains dire. Airdrops of humanitarian aid from various countries only partially alleviate the severe hunger and lack of medical resources in the region. As the Spanish government continues its efforts to save lives amid the collapsing health infrastructure and humanitarian emergency in Gaza, the world watches and hopes for a lasting solution to the ongoing crisis.
