Taking a stroll in the great outdoors can be a delight, but it's essential to stay cautious in gardened, bushy, and grassy lands, as they're a haven for little pests called ticks. That's why the experts from the State Office for Consumer Protection in Saxony-Anhalt are urging folks to prioritize safety against these tiny players.

Each year, new cases of Tick-borne Encephalitis (TBE) are reported in the state, causing annual concern. Despite many cases being symptom-free, TBE can lead to lasting neurological damage. The risk areas in Saxony-Anhalt are Dessau-Roßlau and the district of Anhalt-Bitterfeld, but remember, ticks can lurk just about anywhere!

In the years 2020 to 2024, 18 TBE cases were recorded in Saxony-Anhalt, with one case already reported this year. Nationwide, 2024 saw the second-highest number of TBE cases since records began in 2001, according to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI).

So how do you beat the bite?

  1. Avoid tick havens: Stick to well-trodden paths and remember ticks love tall grass and bushes.
  2. Dress for success: Opt for long, loose clothing and comfy, sturdy shoes. Tucking your pants into your socks adds an extra layer of protection against those unwelcome hitchhikers.
  3. Shield yourself: Use insect repellents containing DEET or picaridin on your exposed skin and clothing. They're like your personal tick-deterring bodyguards!
  4. Check yourself: After spending time outdoors, take a close look at yourbody, focusing on areas like armpits, groin, and behind the ears. Don't forget to scan your pets too!
  5. Properly remove attached ticks: Use fine-tipped tweezers to gently grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible. Pull it upwards with steady, even pressure, and avoid twisting or jerking to prevent any mouthparts from breaking off.

Vaccination is a great way to safeguard yourself against TBE, consisting of three doses. Speak with a healthcare professional to determine if vaccination is suitable for you, especially if you're planning trips to areas with high TBE risk.

To stay updated on peak tick season and local health advisories, keep your ears to the ground (or your eyes on the news)! In addition, be mindful of unpasteurized dairy products in TBE-endemic regions, as some tick-borne diseases can find their way into these products.

Remember, a little precaution goes a long way in protecting your health while enjoying the great outdoors!

  1. Stay informed: Keep yourself updated on community policies regarding tick-borne diseases for workplace-wellness, especially if you frequently visit grassy or wooded areas.
  2. Fitness and exercise advantages: Regular exercise and physical activity can help strengthen your immune system, improving your resistance to medical-conditions such as TBE.
  3. Holistic approach to health: Mental-health, fitness-and-exercise, skin-care, and therapies-and-treatments all play a crucial role in maintaining overall health-and-wellness, helping your body better cope with various medical-conditions, including neurological-disorders like Tick-borne Encephalitis.
