Tech Mahindra Foundation Introduces "The Ability Network", a Platform for Individuals with Disabilities
The Tech Mahindra Foundation has announced the launch of The Ability Network, a groundbreaking initiative aimed at providing verified information and essential guidance to primary caregivers of children with disabilities. This network, set to be accessible through a web-based application and mobile app in the coming months, is anticipated to benefit not only those directly involved but the entire Indian economy.
The Ability Network is a collaborative effort, developed by Tech Mahindra Foundation in partnership with expert organisations such as Enable India, Ujwal Impact Advisors, Nayi Disha, Ekstep Foundation, and Tech Mahindra Ltd.'s Maker's Lab. The initiative is also supported by the Hon'ble Union Minister Dr. Virendra Kumar of Social Justice & Empowerment and Mr. Rajesh Aggarwal, Secretary, Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities.
The Ability Network will offer a range of solution providers including healthcare, education, vocational training, therapy & counselling, and assistive technology. Users will be able to communicate their needs in their preferred language via text or audio on the platform. This accessibility feature is particularly significant, given the lack of an on-demand, accessible ecosystem for timely information and support for persons with disabilities (PwDs) and their caregivers, especially in marginalised communities.
Initially, the network will focus on individuals with visual impairments, hearing impairments, and intellectual disabilities across Telangana and Bengaluru. The first phase of The Ability Network is expected to launch by June 2025.
The Ability Network aims to build a comprehensive community connecting experienced solution providers, product innovators, and grassroots organisations with those seeking information and services. This collaborative approach is expected to drive systemic changes at the policy level for PwDs, with the initiative also collaborating with nonprofits, for-profits, and the government.
According to Mr. Rajesh Aggarwal, Secretary - Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, MSJE (GOI), initiatives like The Ability Network can bring about change at the grassroots level and policy level. Mr. Chetan Kapoor, the CEO of Tech Mahindra Foundation, has emphasised the importance of The Ability Network, stating that it will open a new paradigm in mainstreaming inclusion in India.
With over 15% of the global population experiencing significant disability, and an estimated 70-80 million people living with various disabilities in India, The Ability Network is poised to make a significant impact. For more information about The Ability Network, contact [email protected].
