"The U.N. agency finds it inhumane that children in Gaza City are being told to evacuate."
Israel has launched a long-awaited ground operation into Gaza City, causing hundreds of thousands of residents, including children, to flee their homes. The main urban center in Gaza, where the Israeli military has ordered residents to evacuate, is Gaza City.
The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) has expressed concern over the mass displacement of people, particularly children, from Gaza City. UNICEF spokesperson Tess Ingram stated that the ongoing conflict is causing immense suffering for children in the city.
On August 31, in Geneva, Tess Ingram reported on the poor conditions in the refugee camps in Gaza. She described the conditions at the Mawasi camp as desperate, with people walking into the unknown with little hope of finding solace. Ingram also reported that some children had been killed at the Mawasi camp while collecting water.
During her visit to the main road out of Gaza City, Ingram met a mother, Israa, who was accompanied by her five hungry, thirsty young ones, including two with no shoes. Some people who fled Israel's new offensive on Gaza City are heading back toward the falling bombs.
More than 140,000 people have already fled south from Gaza City since August 14, according to UNICEF. People are fleeing down the main road out of Gaza City this week, as stated by Tess Ingram.
The UN children's agency believes it is inhumane to expect hundreds of thousands of young ones to leave Gaza City. The agency continues to advocate for the safety and well-being of children caught in the conflict.
