Triumph acquired at a steep price: Bitter's triumph punctuated by high cost

In a disappointing turn of events, Giulia Gwinn, the captain of Germany's women's football team, has been ruled out of the Euro 2025 tournament due to a medial cruciate ligament (MCL) injury in her left knee. The injury occurred during Germany's opening match against Poland.

Gwinn, who has previously suffered ACL tears in both knees, was forced to leave the field in tears after twisting her leg while blocking a shot. An MRI scan conducted in Zurich confirmed the injury as a medial ligament injury, which is less severe than an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear. The expected recovery time for the MCL injury is several weeks, and Gwinn will return to her club, Bayern Munich, for treatment.

Despite the setback, Gwinn is expected to rejoin the squad in a supportive role. Her absence is significant given her role as captain and leader on the team.

The match, initially overshadowed by Gwinn's injury, ended on a positive note with Germany securing a 2-0 victory over Poland. Jule Brand scored the first goal for Germany in the 52nd minute, and Lea Schüller added another in the 66th minute. The team chose the same lineup for the tournament debut as in their resounding 4-0 win against the Netherlands.

The German team will continue the tournament without Gwinn on the pitch, but her spirit and guidance will be missed. They are set to face Denmark on Tuesday at 6:00 PM in their next EM match, followed by a potential group decider against Sweden four days later.
