Introducing Cycling UK's Adventure Series: Multi-Day Bikepacking Challenges Across the UK

Cycling UK has unveiled an exciting new collection of bikepacking routes, the Adventure Series, designed to offer accessible yet adventurous cycling experiences across the UK. These long-distance rides, typically spanning 250 to 300 km, feature a mix of quiet roads and off-road trails suitable for gravel or mountain bikes.

One of the standout routes in the Adventure Series is the Royal Chilterns Way, a multi-day, 280 km (174 miles) adventure that showcases the best of the Chiltern Hills. The route, crafted by Max Darkins, begins and ends in Reading, passing through historic towns like Henley-on-Thames, Chesham, Berkhamsted, Dunstable, Wendover, and Marlow.

The Royal Chiltern Way is divided into three marked loops, making it an ideal introduction to bikepacking. Approximately 65% of the route is gravel or non-paved, featuring rolling chalk ridgelines, ancient woodlands, and historic villages. With around 3,383 m of climbing, it offers a challenging yet rewarding cycling experience.

The route passes through scenic Chiltern Hills, historic towns, National Trust sites, vineyards, and riverside pubs. Its name reflects royal historical connections, including Reading’s former status as a royal borough and links to Buckinghamshire and Henley-on-Thames.

GPX files for navigation are freely downloadable from Cycling UK's website, making it easy for riders to plan their journey. The route is designed to be accessible by two London Underground lines and national rail, making it convenient to reach without a car.

Other routes in the Adventure Series include the Rebellion Way, located in Norfolk, and Traws Eryri, presumably in Wales. Each route in the series is designed for a long-weekend escape and is accessible by train, promoting car-free exploration.

The Adventure Series routes connect cities, towns, and villages, bringing real benefits to local communities by supporting regional economies. They also aim to support local tourism, boost mental wellbeing, and provide an affordable cycling challenge. The series, inaugurated by Cycling UK from 2018 onward, is expanding the UK's bikepacking options with routes accessible for riders seeking varied terrain and local cultural experiences without requiring full off-road mountain biking expertise.

Hannah Foster, CUK’s head of membership, stated that long-distance cycle routes are one of the best ways to explore Britain. The Adventure Series is a testament to this statement, offering cyclists a unique and exciting way to discover the beauty and history of the UK.
