UMG Appoints Prof. Anna Lena Illert as New Director of Hematology and Oncology Clinic

Prof. Anna Lena Illert, a renowned translational oncologist, has been appointed as the new director of the Clinic for Hematology and Medical Oncology at the University Medical Center Göttingen (UMG). She takes over from Prof. Dr. Lorenz Trümper, effective October 1, 2025.

Prof. Illert, born in Munich in 1977, received her doctorate in human medicine from the University of Göttingen in 2004. She has been teaching since 2007, focusing on innovative teaching formats and practical transfer of modern therapy concepts. Her research concentrates on deciphering the biological processes of tumor formation to derive personalized treatment strategies.

She is committed to developing translational oncology to bring innovative therapies to cancer patients quickly and effectively. Prof. Illert focuses on personalized, targeted tumor therapy and activating the body's own immune defense against cancer cells. She develops individual, targeted therapies tailored to the specific properties of each tumor disease, focusing on molecular mechanisms of cancer formation, particularly tyrosine kinases.

Prof. Illert is a member of the executive board of the German Network for Personalized Medicine (DNPM) and other scientific commissions. She leads the nationwide working group 'Molecular Tumor Boards' of the DNPM, providing personalized therapy recommendations to over 5,000 patients annually. In 2021, she was awarded a Mildred-Scheel Professorship by the German Cancer Aid for her work on 'Immunomodulatory Oncogenic Signal Transduction'.

Prof. Illert's appointment brings a wealth of expertise in personalized medicine and innovative cancer therapies to UMG. Her focus on individual treatment strategies and commitment to translational oncology promise to advance cancer care in the region. She succeeds Prof. Dr. Lorenz Trümper, who has led the clinic since 2008.
