Psychiatric institutionalization ordered for the individual involved in the Hamburg knife attack due to court rulings - Woman wielding a knife in Hamburg is compulsorily admitted to a psychiatric institution, ruled by a judge.

A Hamburg court has ordered a mental evaluation for a 39-year-old woman suspected of carrying out a knife attack at the city's main station on Friday. Initial investigations suggest the defendant, who appears to be homeless and possibly suffering from a severe mental illness, has no signs of political motivation.

The attack resulted in 18 injuries, with four individuals sustaining life-threatening injuries, seven suffering serious injuries, and seven incurring minor wounds. The four critically injured victims - a 24-year-old woman, a 24-year-old man, a 52-year-old woman, and an 85-year-old man - are currently in stable condition.

The suspect reportedly admitted to the crime in court on Saturday. According to the Hamburg Public Prosecutor's Office, she will be moved to a psychiatric facility soon. Witnesses of the incident and those with relevant video or photo evidence are encouraged to come forward.

The woman was recently released from a closed facility in Lower Saxony, where she resided before the attack. She is presumed to originate from Braunschweig.

The incident occurred around 6:00 PM on the south side of the main station, where the woman armed herself with a knife and proceeded to stab people waiting on platform 13/14. The attack was promptly interrupted by the timely intervention of passersby and a police patrol, and the woman was quickly apprehended. No alcohol or substance abuse was detected during the attack.

The assault temporarily disrupted train services on tracks 11 to 14, leading to delays and detours. The railway announced that the area had been fully restored and all tracks reopened at 01:14 on Sunday.

Political parties have weighed in on the incident, with the Greens calling for a full federal police presence at train stations and airports. Similarly, the Left Party has emphasized the need for improved mental health care resources. Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) has pledged to ensure this measure.

Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) expressed shock and concern for the victims and their families. The incident marks a grim reminder of the need for robust mental health care systems, with ongoing challenges in managing patient risks while balancing autonomy and societal safety.
