The German Order of religious sisters, officially known as the "Order of the Brothers of the German House of Saint Mary in Jerusalem," recently underwent a transformative training programme focused on handling trauma. This initiative, aimed at enhancing their mission to care for survivors of human trafficking and vulnerable individuals, has seen the sisters gain essential skills in active listening, empathy, compassion, effective communication, and psychological first aid.

The training, which resonated deeply with the religious women, was centred around the quote "Healed people, heal people." This sentiment, echoing the Lux Terra philosophy, underscored the importance of a supportive environment for survivors to feel at home and heal.

The sessions covered broad categories of trauma, discussing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and the crucial role of trauma awareness in providing effective care. Art therapy was employed as a means of expression, allowing participants to engage in drawing, designing, or painting as part of their healing process.

Upon completion, the religious women expressed a renewed sense of affirmation in their calling and mission. They pledged to advocate for increased attention to post-trauma programs, ongoing counseling, and holistic support for survivors. The sisters re-committed themselves to creating a supportive environment for survivors, in line with the Nigerian Conference of Women Religious Against Human Trafficking's mission.

The religious women's work emphasises the interconnectedness of the mind, body, and spirit in trauma care and healing. By incorporating art therapy into their approach, they aim to address the emotional and psychological needs of survivors, while also acknowledging the significance of spirituality in the healing process.

As they return to their apostolates, these dedicated sisters are committed to providing holistic support for survivors of trauma, ensuring that they are not only physically cared for but also emotionally and spiritually nurtured on their journey towards healing.
