In the early stages of human evolution, a revolution took place that greatly impacted our survival and way of life – the food-processing revolution. This transformation, which has been a part of human evolution for over 3 million years, was primarily driven by women and children.

Women were mainly responsible for collecting plant foods—roots, tubers, nuts, seeds, fruits—and engaging extensively in processing these resources. This involved activities such as grinding, pounding, soaking, and cooking to make the foods digestible and safe. Their work in food processing was vital in increasing caloric intake and nutrient availability in hunter-gatherer diets, thereby influencing human evolution.

Children often learned food processing techniques from women, contributing actively to gathering and preparation tasks as they grew. This early participation helped develop vital skills needed for adult subsistence roles.

The role of women and children in food processing likely supported the expansion of dietary breadth and nutrient extraction efficiency, promoting brain development and social complexity. Food processing reduced chewing effort and detoxified plant foods, which in turn affected physiological and cultural evolution.

In contemporary hunter-gatherer societies, such as the Pumé of South America, women and children continue to play central roles in food processing. During the rainy season, when game has migrated out of the flooded area and fish are difficult to find, the Pumé rely on underground tubers as their main food source. Women and children work together to prepare these tubers for consumption, a task that accounts for about 85 percent of the calories brought in during this period.

This emphasis on food processing extends well beyond passive support and is essential to the function and success of these early human groups. In the Pumé community, 84 percent of the activities around hearths are of women processing food, cooking, and making the tools to do so.

The earliest identifiable hearths date back to about 300,000-400,000 years ago, underscoring the longstanding significance of food processing in human societies. Anthropologist Richard Lee opines that hammerstones were what transformed mongongo nuts into a stable food for the !Kung hunter-gatherers, further emphasizing the importance of these tools in our history.
